Another week, another five mixes. We’ve got some nice mini mixes of 10 minutes or less this week that put quality over quantity, throwing in manic grime, reliable house and techno, diabetes-inducing internet pop, smooth Braziliana, and steady electro. Get in.
Elijah & Skilliam – Grime Megamix 2016
The rise of grime in 2016 is undeniable. From Skepta copping the Mercury Prize, to a bunch of British tweens jumping on a Shutdown instrumental for a Bar Mitzvah video, and Drake getting a BBK tattoo inked on his shoulder, the genre that was originally tracked indoors under a Reebok Classic is now a household name.
Elijah & Skilliam, heads of Butterz have compiled some of the biggest and best grime tracks of the past year, and have thrown together a nifty little 10 minute preview to the compilation. Listen out for Trim’s Airhead-produced standout ‘Man Like Me’, alongside a whole host of Skepta, Swindle, and JME tunes.
Tomas Nolan Mix for First Second Label
Dublin’s own First Second Label have been responsible for releasing and debuting a plethora of Irish producers’ releases. We’ve featured them on District a handful of times before, and here they’ve gotten Tomas Nolan in for a mix of weird and wonderful thinking man’s techno.
Perfect for people who’ve tuned into Radio na Life late at night while driving along the M50 and heard that perfect mix of hi hats and bass that they sometimes pump out. Unce, unce, chinstroke, unce.
Easyfun – Easy this, easy that
It seems that PC Music have fallen off their conceptual train a little bit, which is a good thing. Instead of curating strange “multimedia reality networks” and plugging non-existent energy drinks, they’re back to what they originally got all their hype and core fans from, making shameless pop club bangers.
Easyfun, a PC Music producer who didn’t really manage to come out of A. G. Cook or Sophie’s shadows, still remains a fan favourite with Laplander arguably the best song PC Music has ever released. They’ve returned with Easy This Easy That, less a mix and more a seven minute song, but still it sounds absolutely fantastic.
Starting off with a skewed vocal sample before breaking into a huge pop chorus that would put Wrecking Ball to shame, it doesn’t take long before a Baroque digital harpsichord enters and breaks up the mix, with it ending on a sugary club banger. Sweet but strange, like a vinegar sorbet.
mafalda – colectivo futurecast 059
Mafalda works alongside Sam Shepherd, aka Floating Points on their relatively new reissues label Melodies International. If anyone’s ever caught a FloPo DJ set they’ll know that he’s fond of obscure, un-Shazammable tracks, often from Brazil. And that’s exactly the same sort of vibe that Mafalda delivers on this mix for Colectivo Futuro.
This crate-diggers mix is an hour worth of smooth and pleasant listening from a selector that truly knows her stuff when it comes to jazz, soul, and Brazilian music from years gone by.
Andy Whittaker: The ‘Monday Is Okay’ Mix
Finally, R&S Records head Andy Whittaker delivers a steady yet engaging mix for The Ransom Note. Taking new-wave, old school electro and a sprinkling of hip hop, this is a reliable mix for easy listening, background music and definitely earns it’s Monday moniker.
