The results are in and it’s a jarring read.

The Expat City Rankings 2019 has surveyed 82 cities from around the world, receiving answers from respondents from across the globe.

According to the members of the planet’s largest network for expats Dublin is great when it comes to career related opportunities, but it falls short in numerous indicators relating to quality of life.

With 82 cities surveyed overall, Ireland’s capital placed in an embarrassing 72nd place overall and finished rock bottom when it came to affordability of housing. Just ahead of Dublin were San Francisco, Munich and Stockholm in the housing rankings. Conversely the top four places to live for affordable housing were Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok and Houston respectively.

The news comes off the back of a controversial decision to spend over €20 million on a new white water rafting facility in the city in the face of a growing housing crisis.

The report, which was published today noted that 86% of people surveyed in Dublin had difficulty getting housing. The statistics speak for themselves when you consider the world average that the report  produced was 32%.

The rankings covered 13 different sub categories and the results from the various polls resulted in an overall score. These include ease of settling in, finance and housing – all necessary and important factors to consider when deciding to relocate to a new city.

The report provides a good indicator people’s quality of life and is another indictment of the lack of affordable housing available.
