On Thursday 5th March all three floors of Indigo & Cloth were full to the brim. We caught up with Dee and Sinead from Hunt&Gather who were hosting a typography exhibition in association with Offset 2015

Hunt&Gather’s relationship with Offset started three years ago when they were in charge of the Little Green Gallery, and has since gone from strength to strength.

“We did a open submission exhibition in conjunction with OFFSET and felt it was really well received,” explains Dee. “When we left Little Green and started H&G we decided to coincide our first open submission with the festival again. It was a show dedicated to  Bill Murray and it was deadly!”

In a world where design has become so competitive, even on our small island, the artists are becoming better and better. For Dee, typography is one of the most striking and visually powerful parts of design.

“We think it’s interesting to see how different people interoperate the written word. We left the theme open so as not to limit our submitter’s creativity and we were really impressed with the results.”

“We got 122 submissions and we chose 38 to be part of the show.

“We were blown away by all the great work we received and were sorry we couldn’t include more but unfortunately we were restricted for space.”

The show featured an abundance of phrases, lettering and words, but what stood out was the amount of swear words. We asked Dee why designers love a good ‘fuck/wanker/shit flaps’.

“Because we all do!? We were a little surprised by all the curse words actually, we didn’t expect there to be so many. Still, it is pretty funny to have a beautifully thought out font spelling ‘arse’.

“As the viewer you can’t get away from it, which I suppose, is the point!”

A Hunt&Gather exhibition never fails to be out of the ordinary, and their next idea is no different. “We tend to do about four open submission shows a year, so our next one will be over the summer more then likely.

“For the theme we were thinking of an Adventure Time exhibition in conjunction with the local artist Ickis Mirolo! So it should be a bit of fun.”
