More welcome support for local businesses.

According to the Irish Times emergency support payments for those who have lost their jobs due to the Covid-19 pandemic will rise from €203 to €350.

It comes alongside news that ministers approved a government scheme to pay 70 per cent of worker’s wages up to €410 a week, with companies paying the remainder of salaries. The scheme is applicable to businesses hampered by the pandemic-induced shutdown and is estimated to cost up to €4 billion.

The numbers are based off the average salary level of €38,000.

In order for employers to be eligible for the scheme they will have to provide evidence of an income decrease of 25 per cent and that they are experiencing liquidity difficulties.

Prior to these developments it was confirmed that schools, crèches and colleges will remain closed beyond the original date of March 29.
