The team behind the project are optimistic that the pilot will pave the way for the development of peer-led out-of-hours services across Ireland.

Galway is set to launch a new out-of-hours mental health support cafe.

A collaboration between the HSE, Galway Local Forum and the Office of Mental Health Engagement and recovery, Galway Community Café will reportedly be staffed by medical professionals. It will also be positioned “Directly opposite the hospital” in Galway.

The cafe will provide a space for people to speak to trained staff with personal experience in the arena of mental health.

According to GalwaybayFM, people visiting the cafe will be able to sit quietly in a relaxed atmosphere or if they choose, they can discreetly indicate they’d like to speak to someone there. That can be for counselling, just a chat or to ask a question.

Galway Community Café will operate from 18.30 – 23.30 Thursday through to Sunday. It’s situated at Mr. Waffle opposite UHG.
