Back in 2016 we spoke with Stephen Byrne for Issue 002 about his experiences making a documentary highlighting homophobia in football. For all of the progress we’ve made as a society, football is still often tarnished by instances prejudice towards the LGBTQ+ community.
Fans of Dublin football club Bohemians are known for their progressive and liberal policies, and one fan is showing that once again.
Brian Teeling has launched a new t-shirt to highlight homophobia in the terraces and encourage football as a whole to do more to call it out.
“Football leaves little or no room for narratives outside of the accepted ‘norm’,” says Brian. “These t-shirts provide a challenge to that establishment. They hold up a mirror to it, forcing it to study it’s performed edifice and accept that not only are members of the LGBTQ+ community here, but we have always been here.”
Brian will be organising a trip to Dalymount Park for disadvantaged LGBTQ+ youth and all profits from the apparel will go towards The Bohemian Foundation and BelongTo.
T-shirts are €20, available to buy via BigCartel here in sizes S to XL. The graphic is derived from the Bass logo on the 1993 Bohemian FC home jersey, and according to Brian it was chosen because this was the year of decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland.
