After finishing his Multimedia degree in early summer, Dublin producer LEEM decided to move to Barcelona. It was during his three months in Catalonia that he created a new 11-track project.
“While I’ve been here I listened to a lot of music by people like Medslaus, Madlib, Paul White and MF DOOM. These become the sources of inspiration for the kind of beats that I was trying to create. So I spent a lot of time searching the internet for samples and ended up using things such as a sample of an old instrument called a hurdy gurdy. Some of the other samples come from artists such as Dr. Lonnie Smith, Radiohead, Nicolas Jaar, and Bobby Womack.
“It became a big part of how I spent my spare time while I was here, so because of that my main focus was just trying to have as much fun as possible with it. Most of the decisions I made regarding adding sounds as samples were decided by what I would find most entertaining in the moment of creation. A sense of rawness is something that I always appreciate in music, so that’s something that I tried to convey with my own, whether that be by choice or limitation.”
