Irish Twitter reacts to Wild Mountain Thyme trailer

Words: Dylan Murphy

They really had to go do it to us huh? 2020 had to get another dig in against Ireland before it bows out.

Antiquated stereotypes? Check. An Irishman that can’t speak in an Irish Accent? Check. Inevitable rage on Twitter? Check.

Last night, a new trailer for Wild Mountain Thyme featuring Emily Blunt, Christopher Walken and Jamie Dornan was released. Touted as a “romantic comedy”, the reaction it received online was more akin to a horror film.

There’s a long-established history of American actors playing Irish characters in films that uphold bizarrely inaccurate and outdated stereotypes about Ireland. Though, this trailer cut a little deeper as it had an actor from County Down doing some weird leprechaun impression.

To make matters worse, the film exists in some sort of weird alternate reality where Ireland doesn’t have mobile phones, but women can freeze their eggs and when they land in America everyone reenters the twenty first century.

By now, most people are used to this kind of shit, but it doesn’t stop people getting their digs in on Twitter. Here’s the best reactions to the trailer that was released last night.

The plight of a nation can often be summed up by what is trending.

We’re not angry, we’re just disappointed, Jamie.

This is a big Yikes for someone that has 2.3 MILLION followers. Six positive comments… SIX!

Sounds about right.

You know things are bad when you are denounced by the governing body of a fictitious being that has only survived because tourism based of lazy stereotypes.
