These plans are being discussed by Cabinet ahead of the launch of the Night Time Economy Taskforce

A major shake-up of alcohol licensing laws is being discussed in Cabinet on September 15. The government is set to examine a wide range of suggestions, from longer opening hours, the utilisation of empty buildings and extending the sale of alcohol to new venues.

A report from the newly launched night-time economy task force, seeks to reform Irish licensing laws and to roll out a series of supports for the nightlife industry.

Minister for Culture Catherine Martin will present the report to the Government, alongside Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Hildegarde Naughton T.D. and Sunil Sharpe, of the Give Us the Night Campaign and the Night-Time Economy Taskforce, and Liz Meaney of the Arts Council.

36 proposed actions will be presented, which vary between bringing Sunday trading times into line with the rest of the week, extending liquor licenses to cultural venues and extending the opening hours of nightclubs.

The report aims to highlight the importance of electronic music and the nightclub sector to the night-time economy and culture.

Many of these proposals included were flagged by Minister Helen McEntee in the Justice Plan earlier this year.
