Thumbstopper: The Purist and Sonnyjim tap up MF DOOM & Jay Electronica on ‘Barz Simpson’

Stop scrolling – Thumbstopper is your must listen to song of the day. Today, The Purist and Sonnyjim introduce their new moniker with a collaboration with Jay Electronica and the late MF DOOM.

Posthumous features have a bad reputation – not without good reason. Just think of all the frankensteined Juice Wrld verses or Pop Smoke 16s that are forced on to tracks like a square peg in a round hole. However, when done right and with the permission of the estate it feels like a tasteful reminder of their genius.

Having produced for Freddie Gibbs, Action Bronson, Danny Brown and countless others, The Purist is a force to be reckoned with in the underground. Likewise, as a rapper and producer, Sonnyjim is up there with the best. So when they came together for a new collaborative project named White Girl Wasted, we knew it’d be a wrap.

They’ve introduced their new project with ‘Barz Simpson’. The head nodder came together organically, with Sonnyjim laying his verse in one take. Feeling like the soundtrack for one of DOOM’s 50s-style cartoon backdrops, the pair asked for a 16 and he hit them back within 24 hours with twice that.

The track comes ahead of a self-titled body of work consisting of eight tracks which lands on September 6 through The Purist’s label Daupe. Lee Scott, Madlib and DJ Premier are also set to feature on the record.

Keep your eyes peeled for the full release and ahead of that, peep the new track.
