Vegan Sandwich Co closes both Dublin locations

Words: Ellen Kenny

After closing their Rathmines store over the summer, Vegan Sandwich Co will also be closing in Smithfield and Stephen’s Green.

Plant-based sandwich shop Vegan Sandwich Co has announced that they are closing their remaining Dublin locations due to the current cost of living crisis.

According to founder Sam Pearson, the last few months “have been some of the most difficult since we started trading”. Over the summer, the vegan store opened a Rathmines store, which subsequently closed three months later. Sam also revealed that the rent in their Stephen’s Green location “doubled” in the last few months.

Despite attempts to find an investment partner, Sam announced that “time has run out” and they will be closing their Stephen’s Green and Smithfield locations.

Sam thanked all the staff and customers of Vegan Sandwich Co, who he described as “the lifeblood of our business.”

“Anyone who has visited any of our stores knows that we have the best staff of anywhere in this city, so to them I need to say a huge thank you”, Sam tweeted, “It’s thanks to all of our staff, past and present, that we have managed to achieve everything we have to date.”

“I am obviously heartbroken at this outcome but still so proud of everything we have achieved. Hopefully I’ll see you all again somewhere soon.”

Michelin-guide restaurant Circa also announced its closure this week due to the rising costs of running a restaurant. Over the summer, many businesses and restaurants reported soaring cost rises, such as Rascals Brewery, who saw a 1000 per cent increase in their energy bills.
