Weekly round-up 27/9/19

Quick-fire questions, the essential events this weekend and a snappy conversation with a masked spitter.

This week’s content was dominated by new music and snappy interviews. We caught up with a mysterious, masked MC from London, spoke to Nealo about which rapper should be Taoiseach and premiered a music video from Belfast’s leading female MC.

Oh and we also released the second instalment of the ultimate Irish hip hop quiz and we upped the difficulty on this one.

TJ O’Grady highlights plight of housing crisis in ‘Why Wait’

Ballymena singer Lilla Vargen collaborated with Irish film and Television Award winning director TJ O’Grady Peyton for a considered visual piece highlighting the homeless crisis in Ireland.
We chatted with TJ and his director of photography Albert Hooi about the motivations behind the video.

R3D Releases debut visuals for ‘That’s The Point’

This week R3D stepped out from behind the decks to recruit an all-star Irish hip hop line-up for his debut visuals for ‘That’s The Point’.

Tebi Rex’s DJ turned rapper called on Txmmy Rose and  Max Zanga for guest features and the track itself presents just over four minutes of flex-fuelled lyricism.

Quick-fire questions: Tebi Rex

Tebi Rex are on a roll, they’ve played festivals in Ireland and beyond this summer including an appearance at ‘The Great Escape’ in Brighton and they recently dropped their debut album. 

Following the release of ‘The Young Will Eat The Old‘, we spoke to Matt Ó of Tebi Rex about how they went about conceptualising the album, what song he’d want to usher him into the octagon and their undying love of a certain singer.

Get to know: Bone Slim

This week on our ‘Get to know’ series we spoke briefly to NiNE8 Collective’s Bone Slim off the back of his EP ‘ifiwas2015′. The masked MC is quickly gaining notoriety among underground hip hop fans through his compelling story-telling and no holds barred style of rap. The spitter likes to keep it quick and concise and didn’t mince his words when speaking about his guilty pleasures, bandit lifestyle and hopes for the new EP.

Dena Anuk$a releases wavey visuals for ‘Shine’

Belfast MC Dena Anuk$a returned with visuals for her newest track ‘Shine’.  It’s been a busy 2019 for Dena, having released numerous singles in the past eight months whilst leading the Belfast division of Gxrl Code.  Continuing her rich vein of form, she has brings her trademark melodic vocals helped with a healthy dose of rapping in the newest effort.

Quick-fire questions: Nealo

Since the release of his ‘October Year’ EP towards the end of 2018, Clonsilla MC Nealo has showed no signs of slowing down, subsequently enjoying an impressive trajectory in 2019.

Utilising his previous musical experience and bringing a softer blend of thoroughly jazzy and thoughtful hip hop, it’s easy to understand his widespread appeal.

The former hardcore front man stopped by to have a back and forth ahead of his headline show in The Grand Social.
