Brendan Fraser to star in Darren Aronofsky’s next film ‘The Whale’

Words: Dylan Murphy

Based on Samuel D. Hunter’s play, a 600-hundred-pound hermit slowly eating himself to death is given one last chance at redemption.

According to Deadline, Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures has teamed up with A24 for his next film The Whale. It’s the first time the director of Requiem for a Dream has worked with A24, the company behind Uncut Gems, Midsommar and Euphoria.

The Whale will see Brendan Fraser star as an overweight recluse with congestive heart failure seeking to revive his failing relationships. It’s based off playwright Samuel D. Hunter’s 2012 play that won the Drama Desk Award, Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play and Outer Critics Circle nominations. It will also represent Aronofsky’s first film since the release of Mother.

Speaking on the upcoming film Hunter said, “Adapting my play into a screenplay has been a real labour of love for me… This story is deeply personal and I’m very thankful it will have the chance to reach a wider audience. I’ve been a fan of Darren’s ever since I saw Requiem for a Dream when I was a college freshman writing my first plays, and I’m so grateful that he’s bringing his singular talent and vision to this film.”

Keep your eyes peeled for the trailer.
