The events will be free to all and will consist of physical in-person events alongside, digital experiences.

Friday 18 September will see Culture Night take place across Ireland. Now in its fifteenth year, cities across Ireland will hold a mixture of both physical events and online events in response to the pandemic.

In line with government guidelines no more than 50 people will be able to gather indoors and no more than 200 outdoors.

2020 sees Culture night appoint new trailblazers – artists that represent the diversity of culture in Ireland from a range of different disciplines and artforms.

Culture Night director Maureen Kennelly spoke ahead of the festivities and said, “While this year presents new challenges for the cultural sector, we see Culture Night as a fantastic opportunity for artists, arts organisations and audiences to connect, online and offline, and to celebrate the value that the arts brings to our lives.”

This year the trailblazers are musician Fehdah, composer and performer Michael Gallen, world champion Irish dancers and Riverdance members The Gardiner Brothers, Gaeilgoir and author Úna-Minh Kavanagh, performer and theatre-maker Mark Smith and podcaster and author Maeve Higgins.

In response to the growing climate crisis John Gerrard has been commissioned to create two artworks. ‘Mirror Pavilion’ will be installed first in Galway City and then in Connemara as part of Galway 2020, European Capital of Culture.
