ddr. announce new city festival ‘Alternating Current’

Words: Dylan Murphy

The new event will feature a series of specially commissioned work showcased on the airwaves before a number of in person concerts and events.

Next month, Dublin Digital Radio turns 5 and to celebrate it is launching a new city festival curated by the team behind the station.

Highlighting Ireland’s other music traditions and exploring the weirder side of the music spectrum, ‘Alternating Current’ is showcasing the networks that converge on ddr.

As part of the festival, ddr. commissioned 16 artists to make new work and have them perform it over the duration of the festival. Kicking off on October 27, the programme consists of specially commissioned radio works and audiovisuals from Jennifer Walshe & Wobbly, Rachel Ni Chuin, Renee Helena Browne, The Digital Druids and Last Eden.

Following on from then, the events will move to the The Complex’s Gallery Space over the Halloween weekend for a number of 3 hour, in-person concerts followed by after parties in a city centre venue.

Speaking on the series Seán Finnan said, “Alternating Current is a celebration of all the weird and wonderful music we encounter daily on Dublin Digital Radio. We’re delighted to showcase some new music made by artists we love in a new hybrid festival for Dublin, presenting novel audiovisual work on Dublin Digital Radio and new live music from 14 artists in the beautiful surroundings of our new home at The Complex, as well as some late-night shenanigans in a yet to be revealed location.”
