New film ‘Patti Cake$’ about an aspiring hip hop artist is coming to Irish cinemas

“My verses full of curses, ’cause I’m stuck in dirty Jersey…”

‘Patti Cake$’ is a new film directed by Geremy Jasper, who also wrote the screenplay, which follows the burgeoning music career of an unlikely rapper who “finds her voice as a one-of-a-kind hip-hop legend in the making”.

Australian actor Danielle MacDonald plays the role of Patricia Dumbrowski from New Jersey, a talented but implausible hip hop artist who goes by the name of Patti Cake$, aka Killa P (no relation to this one).

It’s both Jasper and McDonald’s first feature film, and the underdog outing has gotten stellar reports back from critics at festivals and on its US release.

In fact, at the premiere Sundance director John Cooper was full of praise for Danielle MacDonald. He said, “Not since Jennifer Lawrence have I seen a star like this”.

According to an interview in Vulture, McDonald said she scrubbed up on lots of hip hop for the role. She also did some practice in Bed-Stuy.

“…Geremy sent me pretty much every rapper you can think of, plus a whole bunch of unknown ones. I always liked Biggie, but I have such a new appreciation for him. When I was practicing with my rap coach in Brooklyn where he grew up, it felt so amazing and special.”

‘Patti Cake$’ will be released in Ireland and the UK on Friday September 1. Check out the trailer below.
