Pharrell WIlliams & Kenya Barris in talks with Netflix about feature length musical about Juneteenth

Pharrell also successfully petitioned Virginia’s governor to make Juneteenth a paid holiday.

With the prevalence of the Black Lives Matter movement and the increasing awareness generally of the historical roots of racism, more companies, artists and platforms are highlighting the importance of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is the day celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. The likes of Rihanna took to social media to spread awareness of the holiday, with a number of prominent black celebrities pushing for it to be made a paid national holiday.

Now according to Deadline Netflix is reportedly in talks with grammy winning artist Pharrell Williams and  star of ‘#BlackAF’ Kenya Barris about a feature-length musical about Juneteenth.

It appears that Skateboard P will produce the project with his partner Mimi Valdes alongside Barris who will produce via his own production company Khalabo Ink Society.

Last week Pharrell went to his home state of Virginia to petition the governor to make Juneteenth an official state holiday. He spoke to Jimmy Kimmel about his endeavours to introduce the new state holiday.

Following Texas’ decision to officially recognise Juneteenth as a paid holiday, P’s home state of Virginia became the second to do so.
