Sale of Vapes to Children Banned from Tomorrow

Yes, the sale of vapes to under 18s was unregulated until this point.

E-cigarettes and vaping products will be banned for children in Ireland as of tomorrow. The law, which has been in the works for weeks, now means that it is illegal to sell any vaping product to anyone under the age of 18. Penalties for doing so are severe; ranging from fines of up to €4,000, or as much as six months in prison for those who are caught.

The sale of vapes to children has been controversial for years, but relatively unrestricted until now. Vape companies have continuously denied that they deliberately target children, instead maintaining that the products are used to help smokers quit. However, with flavours such as bubblegum, gummy bear, pink lemonade, an entire Prime collection as well as bright packaging and some reports of unregulated vapes being sold which look like children’s toys, are they kidding anyone?

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has expressed that he’s “pleased” about the anti-vaping laws coming into effect before Christmas. More anti-nicotine regulations are expected to come into effect in the new year, such as regulations around licensing, advertisement restrictions and the restriction of tobacco being sold in vending machines, as well as ongoing debate surrounding the banning of vapes altogether.
