The Week in Food and Drink: 06/12/22

Instead of firing this at you one at a time, we’ve consolidated the weekend’s biggest points and pivots into a chonky newsworthy list. Have at it.

Whiplash Released a New Beer

Word With Yourself is a new limited edition beer made without Barley. According to their Twitter, the beer is “an absolute belter, so it deserved a second brew in a big tank. Sixty per cent wheat and forty per cent oats, this beer has the softest, fluffiest mouthfeel you can imagine.” You can get it direct from Whiplash on their website or at select independent retailers nationwide.

Dublin Gets New Hot Dog Spot

2023 will be Dublin’s Hot Dog era, calling it now. Dublin’s latest Hot Dog place opened in Dublin 15 this weekend. Bad Dog offers six choices of eight-inch Hot Dogs 8 with the classic frankfurter sausage. Each in honour of a different New York area.

Pete’s Provisions Open Second Location

The collab between Pete’s Provisions and Oxmantowns sister Elliots is the buzz you didn’t know you needed.

Petes Provisions mark two opened in Dublin 7. The first Petes provisions opened in Raheny in Dublin 5 and have been a local success since. It is the shared vision of friends Connor Higgins and Darren Thompson. Both of whom are restaurant industry veterans. Pete’s PRovisions in Raheny is know for its interesting collection of wines and “packs” of three to seven mixed bottles. these are designed to encourage you to try and discover something new.

These wine offerings should complement the pastry Elliot’s has been dominating Dublin 7 with recently.

Fasta has closed

To the devastation of commuters everywhere, Connelly Stations’ only banger, Fasta, has closed. Fasta announced the closure on Instagram, “It has been a bumpy couple of years, to put it mildly. However, it has sadly become clear that it is no longer viable to continue at this location”.

Saltwater Grocery to Close

One of CHAR’s favourites, Saltwater Grocery, has had to cease being a grocery. Despite winning newcomer of the year at the Food & Wine Awards, the collab between Karl Wheelan and Nial Sabongi has been struggling of late. The restaurant is still running Thursday to Saturday for December, but the conjecture on the rumour mill is that that’s just till Christmas. This will be an incredible loss to the people of the Terenure/Rathgar area. It’s believed they are looking for a more central location for 2023. Fingers crossed, and wood touched for them.

Veginity to Close

Veginity is also closing at the end of this month. Open since 2016 they have been a destination venue for vegans and vegetarians alike. They announced their closure yesterday on Instagram saying it’s just not financially viable for them to continue.

It’s Not All Doom and Gloom

Baileys launched a Tiramisu flavour for the winter that is available nationwide in Centra. The coffee and cream liquor is ideal for a sweeter Irish coffee adjacent drink on these dark, cold December days.

Harry’s Nut Butter have released a series of chocolate truffles, and they are so decadent. The perfect pick-me-up to pretend is a stocking filler for someone else.
