W.D. O’Connell releases first Pot Still

Words: Shamim de Brún

The release is strictly limited to 250 bottles which will go on sale at 12 noon on Friday.

Available exclusively from the W.D. O’Connell online store, Tomásín follows their sell-out releases of the PX Series, Sherry Series, Bill Phil and Bourbon & Rye this Winter.

Single Pot Still whiskey is seen as the quintessential Irish style of whiskey. It is more difficult and more expensive to produce but it has a devout following. The Tomásín will retail at 79.95 euro and is the first in a series of Pot Stills expected from W.D. O’Connell.

Distilled at Great Northern Distillery in 2016 the whiskey is named after the home of their new headquarters in Choill Mhic Thomáisín (Kilmacthomas in English), Co. Waterford.

W.D. O’Connell has been popular among drinkers and collectors alike for its innovative quality and boundary-pushing. Every release is categorically different from the previous. They are perfectly candid about where their whiskey was distilled and take pride in their maturation and finishing preferences.

The team at W.D specialise in limited batches of premium whiskey. Each is always signed and numbered. They can fetch hefty sums on the secondary market but are also engagingly drinkable.

The tech stuff: Distilled September 2016 at Great Northern Distillery. Non-chill-filtered, 49 per cent ABV. Matured in an ex-bourbon cask and an ex-Bill Phil peated single malt cask.
