6% of 25 to 34 year olds surveyed admitted to pursuing a romantic relationship with an AI chatbot.
New research commissioned by Pure Telecom and conducted by Censuswide has uncovered surprising trends in how humans are beginning to form emotional connections to AI. According to the data which surveyed over 1000 adults in Ireland, 13% of men reported having had a romantic relationship with an AI chatbot, nearly double the 7% of women who said the same.
The most engaged age group was 25 to 34 year olds, with 16% admitting to pursuing a romantic relationship with an AI chatbot.
One in five respondents believed that romantic relationships with AI are, or could be, less complicated than those with real people. Meanwhile, 10 per cent see these digital connections as a valuable way to practice for real-life relationships.
Beyond romance, AI chatbots are also being increasingly used for personal wellbeing. The study found that 18% of people use AI to research health symptoms and treatments, while 10% turn to AI as a form of therapy or for life advice.
As levels of loneliness in Ireland and AI use globally continue to soar, these findings highlight a growing shift in how people are choosing to seek connection, support, and intimacy in the digital age. While the idea of romantic relationships with AI may still seem unconventional to some, the data suggests that for a significant portion of the population AI is becoming a big part of their emotional lives.
