In 2025 there were 55 million journeys on Dublin’s Luas service
Transdev, the current operator of Dublin’s Luas, has recently released statistics on the latest Luas figures. According to the new data, in 2025 there were 55 million journeys on Dublin’s Luas service, the highest number to date.
During this time, almost 20,000 fines were paid by those caught avoiding fares, with each fine costing the individual a minimum of €45. If the offender doesn’t pay the ticket within 2 weeks of receiving the fine, the fine increases to €100 and can result in legal proceedings.
In 2024, 17,691 fines were issued to those skipping the fare, which generated around €825,475. However, last year, the number of fines issued rose by 10.6%, with the total value of these fines amounting to €908,835.
“[Transdev is] proud of our strong fare compliance record, with 97 per cent of Luas passengers travelling with a valid ticket”.
As part of the fine process, people are able to appeal the fine. In 2024, there were a total of 1,062 successful appeals, but in 2025, that number fell to 876, with a total of 54 people per day getting fined by security staff.
