A new multi-purpose arena based in the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown area has been unveiled. The new arena is set to host concerts, exhibitions, conventions and even be the home for Ireland’s first ice hockey franchise as well as being a hub for other winter sports.
Currently, Ireland severely lacks in winter sporting facilities, with Dublin being the only capital city in Northern Europe without a permanent centre for ice sports. The 5,000-seat stadium is projected to host over 50 events per year, with it estimated to bring in over €230 million annually.
The plan comes as part of the mixed-use Cherrywood development project, which aims to enliven one of the most newly developed areas of Dublin. The venue will contain two Olympic standard ice rinks as well as a “high-performance training centre” for athletes. Planning applications are expected to be submitted later this year.
Currently, Ireland has never won a medal in the Winter Olympic Games, with the best finish being Clifton Wrottesley who came fourth in Men’s Skeleton in 2002.
“We’re creating a national landmark that will open up winter sports to every corner of Irish society, empower our athletes, and give Ireland the platform it deserves to host world-class events.” said Dermot Rigley Chief Executive of Prime Arena Holding, a main investor in the plan.
