The single comes ahead of their debut EP due early next year.
We first became familiar with Mullingar singer amy michelle with her demos and covers on Youtube which included a reworked version of Fontaines D.C.’s ‘Roy’s Tune’. The bedroom pop aesthetic and homespun quality of the loosies had us patiently waiting for her first official release and today she’s gifted us ‘the bottom of the well‘.
Landing via Method Records (slowthai), the softly delivered, autumnal cut shares DNA with the otherworldly leanings of Phoebe Bridgers and provides an invitation to amy’s world. Written and produced by amy in her bedroom just before the pandemic, inspiration came from that soon-to-be timely place “of fear and entrapment. I’ve always struggled with sleep, but was dealing with particularly intrusive nightmares. Seeing some sort of light from the bottom of a well – but not having the strength to reach it – became symbolic of insecurities, uncertainties, and heartbreak”, she said.
The original demo of ‘bottom of the well’ landed on Youtube with a compilation of nostalgic home videos, with the final track completed with additional production from amy and Rich Cooper (Rina Sawyama, Dua Lipa).
‘the bottom of the well’ arrives ahead of amy’s debut EP due early next year and throws her name in the ring as a late contender for one to watch in 2022.
