As well as redevelopments to Casement Park and transport links.

As part of a Shared Ireland Initiative, the Government have said that it will commit 1 billion euro to projects in Northern Ireland. Alongside promises of a long-awaited hourly Belfast-Dublin train link, 600 million euro has been pledged to complete to A5 road connecting Monaghan and Derry, and 50 million euro has been pledged towards the redevelopment of Casement Park, which will come just in time for the EUFA Euro 2028 tournament, hosted by Ireland and the UK.

“It is about understanding that, whatever the constitutional future of Ireland brings, investing in people, in quality of life, in opportunity, and for the generations to come, are all of our responsibilities and a common good we can best progress by working together,” said Leo Varadkar.

With regard to the project, Tánaiste Micheál Martin stated “It is unlocking an entirely new tourism project and is also a strong connectivity project.”

The GAA stadium has been derelict for over a decade. The estimated cost of its redevelopment is around 200 million euro. While the development of the abandoned space is primarily for soccer, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has expressed hope that the stadium might be used for GAA and a wide range of cultural and sporting events once building work has been completed.

The funding will also be used for cross-border co-operation schemes for women’s entrepreneurship, 10 million euro for the Battle of the Boyne site, and the construction of a bridge linking the Mourne Mountains with the Cooley Peninsula.
