Ballymun is an Animated Survival Game in BRICKNASTY’s ‘ducks ina row’

Words: Dylan Murphy

The Dublin group share a dark new video ahead of the release of their new debut EP INA CRUELER.

BRICKNASTY have been pretty consistent in dropping impressive visuals to go along with their music to date. However, ‘ducks ina row’, is their most captivating yet. The animated visuals see the BRICKNASTY character move through Ballymun whilst attempting to evade trouble before inevitably respawning.

The animated characters were designed by Cmkreal, who has recently worked with slowthai for Heaven by Marc Jacobs amongst others. Animation, Colour Grade, Environments and final edit were completed Zach Bleech who has worked with acts like Jawnino, with motion graphics and 3D assistance by RILLA.127.

ducks ina row’ comes ahead of their debut EP INA CRUELER, which is set to land via FAMM on June 7. The Dublin group recently signed to the label which houses Jorja Smith, ENNY, Maverick Sabre and more and celebrated the news with the release of Khakikid-assisted single ‘Fashion’.

BRICKNASTY came to be after frontman and guitarist Fatboy connected with producer Cillian McCauley on Soundcloud before expanding the group and joining forces with Dara Abdurahman (bass), Korey Thomas (drums) and Louis Younge (sax/keys). Posessing a genuinely unique sound, the group’s music thus far pinches inspiration from acts ranging from D’Angelo to MF DOOM whilst maintaining the authentic storytelling that puts them on the crest of the new wave of music coming from Ireland.

With Ballymun’s history at risk of being lost, Fatboy makes it his mission on the forthcoming EP to detail his experiences and showcase the area’s unique story. Across the record he melds field recordings, interviews with family and pays homage to Ross McDonnell’s phenomal photobook Joyrider which earnestly captures Ballymun. He says, “It feels like a plate of dinner that’s gonna grow legs and run away from ya as fast as ya can. I’m trying to metabolise all the memories before I forget them.”

“There’s pictures of the place I’m from, there’s interviews with the people who actually did raise me. I wanted to take you by the hand and take you to the actual physical place…let you hear from the horse’s mouth rather than talking and talking at ya.”

ducks ina row’ comes ahead of shows at The Workman’s Club on 25 May and appearances at Primavera Pro, Beyond The Pale Festival and Otherside Festival.
