Barry Keoghan replaces Paul Mescal in new Irish crime drama film

Words: Eva O’Beirne

Barry Keoghan has replaced Paul Mescal in Bring Them Down, a Mubi crime feature drama currently filming in Ireland.

The film follows an Irish shepherd who is drawn into violent conflict with a neighbouring farm when unknown men massacre his sheep.

Keoghan, along with Michael Abbott, was announced to be joining the cast today, replacing Paul Mescal and Tom Burke.

Bring Them Down will be the debut feature of Chris Andrews, known for his award-winning short films Stalker and Fire. Also starring Colm Meaney (Gangs of London, Star Trek), Nora-Jane Noone (Wildfire, Brooklyn) Paul Ready (Motherland, The Terror), and Susan Lynch (Happy Valley, Unforgotten), the film is now in its final production stages.

The plot follows Michael (Abbott), the last son of a shepherding family, who lives with his ailing father, Ray (Meaney). Burdened by a terrible secret, Michael has isolated himself from the world.

When a conflict with rival farmer Gary (Ready) and his son Jack (Keoghan) escalates, Michael is drawn into a devastating chain of events, forcing him to confront the horrors of his past, leaving both families permanently altered.

With the film now in the final stages of principal filmography, it looks like the film will be released in 2024 at the earliest.

The news comes after Keoghan secured his first BAFTA over the weekend for his performance in Banshees of Inisherin.
