Do you like films? Do you like music? If so, this one’s for you.
The RTÉ Concert Orchestra are linking up with UK jazz heavyweight Joe Stilgoe for ‘A Night at the Movies’. This is a celebration of the greatest film soundtracks of the past 100 years.
Led by conductor Tom Richards, the orchestra are turning the National Concert Hall, and UCH Limerick, into golden-age Hollywood. They will be delivering orchestral reworks of classics like ‘That’s Entertainment’, ‘Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head’, and the timeless ‘Moon River’ through their dense strings and big brass sounds.
What’s so interesting about a gig like this? Well for one, the versatility of the RTÉ concert orchestra themselves. Not only can they play usual classical style music, they can also merge across genres, all while keeping their own unique sound. This time, jazz will be interwoven throughout the performance.
That’s where Joe Stilgoe steps in. He is known for fusing old-school swing with modern wit. On the nights, he will be joined by Ben Reynolds on drums and Tom Farmer on double bass, bringing that live jazz edge to the cinematic sounds of the orchestra.
What a perfect way to ease you in to Oscars weekend? If you’re not planning to attend the official 98th Annual Awards in LA that Sunday, why not treat this as your own little ceremony? This is celebration of homegrown Irish talent, with cross-country collaboration on a cinematic scale.
