CMAT wins ‘Album of the Year’ at RTÉ Choice Music Prize

Words: Eva O’Beirne

Country-pop artist CMAT was nominated for her debut album If My Wife New I’d Be Dead

Last night in Vicar Street it was announced that Ciara Mary Alice Thompson (CMAT) won the RTÉ Choice Music Prize for ‘Album of the Year’. The prize was presented by last year’s Choice Prize winner, Dave Balfe who performs under the name For Those I Love.

Drag queen Lavender collected the award on CMAT’s behalf as she is currently away on tour.

The winner of the RTÉ Choice Music Prize receives a cheque for 10,000 euro, a prize which has been provided by the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) and the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA), as well as a specially commissioned award.

RTÉ2 will broadcast a one-hour TV programme of the RTÉ Choice Music Prize, featuring live performances, along with interviews by Bláthnaid Treacy on Thursday 16 March at 22:30.

Fontaines D.C. picked the award for ‘Irish Artist of the Year’ while Moncrieff won in the ‘Irish Song of the Year’ category for Warm – the song was selected from a shortlist of ten songs by public vote.

Cian Ducrot was named the Breakthrough Irish Artist of the Year and Sinead O’Connor made a surprise appearance to receive her prize for Irish Classic Album, presented by Dave Fanning, for I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got.
