Council gives green light for Katie Taylor v Amanda Serrano Croke Park rematch

Words: Eva O’Beirne

The first step in granting a licence for the world boxing rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano in Croke Park has been successful.

Katie defeated Serrano in Madison Square Garden in a self-described “career-defining” performance on April 30. It was her fifth win as an undisputed lightweight champion.

Former Lord Mayor of Dublin and Independent councillor Christy Burke, along with Niall Ring, submitted a motion for the Central Area Committee and an emergency motion at Monday night’s monthly meeting of the Council to allow the rematch to occur in Dublin this autumn.

All councillors have agreed to back the granting of a licence to allow the October staging of the match to go ahead.

Councillors also backed calls that Olympic Gold medallist Kellie Harrington to also be placed on the October line-up. Harrington will be receiving the Freedom of Dublin next month.

Talks are already underway between Croke Park Management and Katie’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, and Youtuber Jake Paul, Serrano’s agent, on holding a rematch in front of 80,000 fans in October. Junior Sports Minister, Jack Chambers, has also pledged his support for the proposed fight.

One of the several residents’ organisations around the Croke Park venue have said they would not block the holding of the event if it went ahead.

Normally planning regulations allow for three events per year to be held at Croke Park which are not GAA fixtures. Five Garth Brooks concerts are already scheduled for September, which may cause issues with the planning of the rematch.
