Department of Education received dozens of abusive letters due to sex-ed updates

Catholic Ireland is well and truly alive according to these letters.
The Irish Examiner reported earlier today that the Department of Education has received dozens of letters about proposed changes to the sex education curriculum for schools.
Many contain abusive and aggressive content, with one saying proposals to “indoctrinate” innocent children were “sickening”
Another said the Department should not be contributing to the “nation’s immorality” and that Ireland was a place where “people’s morals are at an all-time low”.
A different letter complained of what they said was the “grooming and sexualisation” of school kids, accusing the Department of compromising their safety.
When the news initially broke in July that Ireland’s sex education would be updated to include elements about consent, pornography and LGBTQ+ issues, there was immediate uproar as well as celebration.
Numerous websites used the fact pornography would be discussed in classrooms as a click-bait element while ignoring the benefits of inclusive education.
The demand for better sex education amongst secondary school students is evident as over 4,000 Transition Year students from 52 schools are to take part in a new project aimed at helping teenagers to learn about sexual and reproductive health.
The ‘Debunking the Myths’ programme is a collaboration between the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland and the Rotunda Hospital and is designed to “help teenagers learn more about these topics by stimulating open discussion and curiosity while providing clear and reliable information in a non-biased a non-judgemental way”.
