Dublin City Council fences off Portobello Plaza ahead of the weekend

Words: Emily Mullen

“We appeal to the public not to come here”

Following consultation with local residents, public representatives, and An Garda Síochána, Dublin City Council (DCC) have announced the closure of Portobello Plaza from 14th-17th of May

This decision has been taken due to what DCC are calling “completely unacceptable” and “anti-social behaviour”.

DCC tweeted a video of the barricaded area which they have said, “up to a thousand people have congregated in the area on recent weekends, without due regard for Covid-19 restrictions.”

It’s unsure whether this action will be repeated in the coming weeks, as DCC said the situation “will be reviewed next week.”

DCC appealed to the public “not to come to the Plaza” and reiterated that “it is illegal to drink alcohol outdoors in a public place under City Council bye-laws.”

The council also added that there will be an “increased enforcement by An Garda Síochána in the Portobello area this weekend and anyone found consuming alcohol outdoors in a public space may be fined.”

Lord Mayor Hazel Chu responded to the move by DCC by saying “myself and a few others objected to this and insisted on alternatives.”

This action has been met with acrimony from users online, see some of the responses below:
