Eurovision Have Effectively Banned Artists From Displaying The Pride or Palestinian Flags On Stage

The European Broadcasting Union have tightened their flag policy for performers, effectively banning both Pride and Palestinian imagery from the stage. Yesterday, the commission in charge of the Eurovision competition announced that performers and their entourage will only be able to carry and present flags of nations competing in the competition. This includes backstage, at the Eurovision opening ceremony and at any point whilst performing in the competition.

The competition is set to take place in Switzerland this year, with all contestants being approved flags by the Swiss television authorities. Calls from activism groups have also accused the EBU of restricting flag rules in an attempt to stifle the number of Palestinian flags present on stage at the competition, which Israel participates in. Last year in Sweden, the Palestinian flag was banned for the crowd, with this year’s ban not being present. Artists are also banned from displaying the Ukrainian flag in solidarity with the participating nation.

Last year, the competition became embroiled in controversy after the Israeli entry was forced to be revised due to having a political undertone. Their submission “October Rain” referenced the Hamas attacks of October 7th and was forced to be revised, with calls for the nation’s disqualification. Ireland’s submission last year, Bambie Thug, also came under fire for her participation in the competition due to Israel’s attendance. This year, Ireland’s submission to Eurovision is Norwegian singer, Emmy, with the track ‘Laika Party’ , with the track having Irish songwriting credits.
