Evan Miles shares the soul-cleansing ‘It’s Gunna Hurt Me’

Words: Dylan Murphy

The Anomaly co-founder is back with a cathartic new record.

Evan Miles is back with his first bit of new music since his ‘Last Night’ (edit) featuring fellow anomaly collective member Rikshaw. His return comes in the form of a meditative new cut ‘It’s Gunna Hurt Me’.

Reflecting the difficult times we live in, Evan has created a hypnotic and moody track that projects and embraces much of the omnipresent emotions of 2020.

Speaking on the inspiration behind the record Evan said, “I’ve been listening to a lot of Tourist, Four Tet and Bonobo recently, kinda using them as inspiration really. With ‘It’s Gunna Hurt Me’ I started off tryna see what kinda message I want to try and get across. I’d lay down the chords on the piano and then kind of base my ideas off that really. With this song then I really wanted to get a whole message across by just using one phrase.”

“I’ve been studying and looking into Steve Reich and his works for a while now, mostly through college. The repeating vocal phrase loops and loops until the listener is left with the rhythmic and tonal patterns of the spoken word. It’s not exactly what Reich was doing but it’s my kinda spin on it almost. I try to find a blend of making my music not just straight up dance music, a bit more alternative but still fairly accessible. I want to make it relatable uno”.
