Genesis Owusu is on a psychedelic voyage in ‘Same Thing’

Words: Dylan Murphy

Lock into the trippy new visuals from the Ghanaian-Australian trailblazer.

Having shared his spellbinding debut album Smiling With No Teeth earlier this year, Genesis Owusu is continuing his unstoppable rise with the release of the future funk anthem ‘Same Thing’.

Sharing DNA with quirky genreless acts like Tyler, The Creator and Thundercat, the glam-tinted lens Genesis Owusu sees the world through is an essential arm of his vibrant world-building which is highlighted in the latest trippy visuals.

Speaking on the new video Owusu said, “When the band and I were creating Smiling With No Teeth, we essentially made 60 hours of music for the album in 6 days. The songs chosen for the album conveyed a very specific narrative, but we also made a lot of great music that didn’t necessarily fit the album’s narrative points. Same Thing was one of the tracks born from the seemingly limitless SWNT sessions. The track is still in the realm of the album’s themes of mental health (more specifically, the crazy shit the mind makes up), so the video follows suit with a psychedelic barrage of both colourful and claustrophobic imagery.”

Smiling With No Teeth was Owusu’s first extended release since 2017’s debut EP Cardrive. He’s since found fans in Sir Elton John and there’s no sign of slowing down anytime soon for the polymath.
