Here’s Why We Can’t Wait For Paul Thomas Anderon’s New Gritty Blockbuster

Paul Thomas Anderson is returning with ‘One Battle After Another’, the newest blockbuster from Warner Bros, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn. Here’s how you can see it before anyone else with our District Film Club.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s filmography is a no-miss catalogue of visually stunning and narratively gripping cinema. There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights, Magnolia and now One Battle After Another. His newest work draws from the novel Vineland to tell the story of ex-revolutionaries on a rescue mission to find one of their daughters.

Washed-up revolutionary Bob, played by DiCaprio, exists in a state of stoned paranoia, surviving off-grid with his spirited, self-reliant daughter, Willa. When his evil nemesis, played by Sean Penn, resurfaces after 16 years and she goes missing, the former radical scrambles to find her, father and daughter both battling the consequences of his past.

We’re also seeing one of the heaviest casts of the year. Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor and the list goes on. Anderson is usually known for working within his means, known for films with modest budgets. However, this is his first foray into a large budget blockbuster, unbounding the limits of his writing, which we already know is some of the best in the world. The entire film has been shot in Vistavision, a vintage shooting method popularised in the 50s and 60s, known for the striking imagery it provides. Drawing on the landscapes and chaos of this film, the shooting style is a perfect match.

To attend the Irish premiere of ‘One Battle After Another’, sign up for our District Film Club. Come join us at the first screening in Ireland for the film purists on 23 September in Dublin.
