Instagram are introducing pronouns for your personal profile

Words: Dylan Murphy

Users will be able to add their desired pronouns beneath their name on their profile.

Last night, Instagram revealed that they are beginning to roll out the ability to add up to four of your preferred pronouns to your own Instagram account. While many people have already chosen to display their pronouns by manually entering them in their own description, the social media app will soon give users the option to place their preferred pronouns in grey text below their names.

The new field will be made accessible in the ‘edit profile’ section and users can then decide whether to display their pronouns publicly or only to their followers, with those under the age of 18 having this setting turned on by default.

Instagram has stated this is available in a “few countries”, but hasn’t elaborated in which ones exactly and when it the functionality would expand to others.

Currently, you can only select from a number of selected pronouns, however, Instagram did say in a tweet, Instagram said, “We’ll continue to update the list of terms over time, so that more people around the world can share their pronouns more easily.”
