Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation calls for masks to be reintroduced

Words: Eva O’Beirne

Professor Luke O’Neill has backed IMNOs recommendations for mandatory mask-wearing to be reintroduced in indoor and crowded settings due to a rise in case numbers.

On Tuesday, 23,702 new Covid-19 cases were reported to the Department of Health. The new BA.2 variant, which is more transmissible, but not more dangerous than other variants has been an area of concern for health officials globally.

O’Neill has also called for Covid testing facilities to be “ramped up” for the next four to six weeks as the new wave of the coronavirus hits the country.

Currently, 660 patients are on hospital trolleys in Ireland. IMNO has called on Stephen Donnelly, the Minister for Health to declare a national emergency in Irish hospitals.
