Mahalia enlists Rico Nasty on ‘Jealous’

Words: Dylan Murphy

GRAMMY-nominated R&B star Mahalia is back with an infectious new cut featuring Maryland’s resident shape shifter Rico Nasty.

Last night, Leicester’s Mahalia returned from her hiatus with a brand new track ‘Jealous’ featuring Rico Nasty.

Challenging conventional gender tropes and the lens through which women should see themselves, Mahalia has provided a thoughtful cut that doesn’t compromise on infectious melodies.

Speaking on the track Mahalia said, “I made “Jealous” on a sunny day at the end of Summer last year”.

I was sat in the studio with Cadenza and Miraa May getting some stuff off my chest from the past few weeks. ‘Jealous’ was born pretty fast after chatting. It was a weird time… I was dealing with friends being super unsupportive about decisions I was making and I was struggling with navigating that. I’m really proud and excited about what came out in this song and I hope people love it in the same way we did when we wrote it. Rico Nasty is a badass and one of my favourite artists so getting her to feature was a huge moment for me!”.

Directed by British director, Melody Maker, the video nods to the 1998 US crime film, Belly.

2020 was a big year for Mahalia. Kicking things off with her second BRIT nomination, she later went on to feature on Pa Salieu’s debut Mixtape Send Them To Coventry before receiving a GRAMMY nomination for her feature on Jacob Collier’s ‘All I Need‘.

The success didn’t stop there, shortly after, Mahalia rounded off the with three MOBO nominations for ‘Best Female Act’, ‘Best R&B/Soul Act’ and ‘Album Of The Year’ for her debut album, ‘Love and Compromise’, winning in the first two categories.

Keep your eyes peeled for the next chapter from Mahalia and in the meantime watch the video for ‘Jealous’ below:
