Michael D. Higgins spotted with a new puppy in the grounds of Áras an Uachtaráin

A friend for Bród… Michael D. Higgins replaces the irreplaceable.

Such was the fame of the Bernese Mountain dogs that gambolled around the grounds of Áras an Uachtaráin, that some referred to Michael D. Higgins (the President of Ireland) as “the owner of Bród and Síoda”. The pair were seemingly inseparable as they greeted dignitaries and posed for photos with fans. Glimpses of the pair from the Phoenix Park were commonplace and such was their adoration an unofficial Twitter account was launched entitled “Bród and Síoda” which has over 19k adoring fans.

However, on Saturday, September 19, 2020 the dream came to an end when a spokesperson for President Higgins confirmed that Síoda had died after a short illness. In the weeks following her death a mural was dedicated to Síoda with the words, “Naomh Síoda, Madra na hÉireann”.

After several months of grieving, by the country and the head of state, there appears to be a new puppy in Áras an Uachtaráin. Pictures show the young Bernese Mountain dog receiving pets from President Higgins. While the pup has not as yet been publicly introduced, we will be refreshing @PresidentIRL Twitter profile until it happens.
