Paul Mescal’s GAA shorts are up for auction

Words: Ellen Kenny

They’ve made it to Coachella, they’ve made it to Gucci, and now, GAA shorts have made it to an international auction.

The iconic shorts, signed by the soft boy Paul Mescal himself, are being auctioned off in aid of Ukrainian filmmakers.

You’ll recognise the blue and yellow shorts from the slow-mo match scene in Normal People. GAA never looked so sexy.

The bid started at 500 euros, and the auction will end on July 17.

There’s no telling how much these shorts will go for. But the world-changing chain that Connell wears throughout the series was sold for 60,000 pounds in 2020. So things are looking good.

Also up for auction is a book of the Normal People scripts, signed by director Lenny Abrahamson. The script for episode one signed by director Lenny and stars Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar Jones is also available.

The auction is part of a campaign organised by Lenny Abrahamson and Element Pictures. They hope to money for Ukrainian filmmakers affected by the ongoing war.

Connell’s distinct shorts brought a worldwide appreciation for GAA-couture. Paul Mescal made waves at Coachella this year with a pair of classic O’Neill shorts. Fashion powerhouse Gucci released a pair of shorts remarkably similar to Connell’s worth 550 euros.
