Phil Kieran is Playing in The Strand Cinema With The Ulster Orchestra before its Refurbishment

The producer and composer is performing in the space for one last time before it is renovated.

In 2023, Belfast producer Phil Kieran released his album ‘The Strand Cinema’, which went on to be nominated for the NI Music Prize Album of the Year. He later released a live version with The Ulster Orchestra, and now, he’s performing live with them in The Strand Cinema, Belfast before it closes for refurbishment.

The album paid tribute to the art deco building where Phil based his studio for five years and played an instrumental part in his move towards a more cinematic sound.

Speaking on the album, Phil says “I was interested in how the essence of the building as a communal space with its own daily rhythms was changed during the lockdowns. Reflected on how much film theatres worldwide have changed since my childhood and what the future might bring, how communal activities like going to the cinema are changing over time, and how technology and external forces affect that”.

The accompanying A/V show features visuals by artists in film, animation, architecture, computer science and contemporary dance.

Phil performs on Saturday 20 April. Click here for tickets.
