Mo Chara’s terrorism trial is still ongoing.
Kneecap will not be prosecuted over comments made at a 2023 concert allegedly calling for the killing of British Conservative MPs. The Metropolitan Police confirmed it has dropped its investigation after determining that the alleged offences occurred outside the statutory time limit for prosecution.
The video, including the band allegedly saying “Kill your local MP. The only good Tory is a dead Tory”, resurfaced in April following Kneecap’s appearance at Coachella, where they displayed banners condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza.
“A thorough investigation has now been completed by detectives from the Counter Terrorism Command, which included interviewing an individual under caution and seeking early investigative advice from the Crown Prosecution Service,” the Met said in a statement.
“Any potential summary only offences were beyond the statutory time limit for prosecution. Relevant indictable offences were considered… a decision has been made that no further action will be taken at this time.”
Kneecap later issued an apology to the families of MPs David Amess and Jo Cox, who were murdered in 2021 and 2016 respectively: “To the Amess and Cox families, we send our heartfelt apologies, we never intended to cause you hurt.”
The decision is unrelated to a separate ongoing case involving member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh (Mo Chara), charged with terrorism over allegedly displaying a Hizbullah flag at a London concert. A further hearing is set for August 20th.
