Teenager pleads guilty to stealing a Dublin bus for 30 minutes

Words: Ellen Kenny

If the bus doesn’t come on time, this teenager will make it come on time.

A teenager has pleaded guilty to stealing a double decker bus in Dublin, and is now awaiting his sentence.

Last August, the seventeen year old boy went missing from his care facility in Cork, before being charged with theft of a Dublin bus. The teen reported that he stole a phone and sold it in order to get from Cork to Dublin.

The teenager stole the vehicle from the Go Ahead Ireland premises in Ballymount. He took to the Naas Road and went on a drive for about 30 minutes before bringing the bus back. Surely if you’re going to steal a Dublin bus, you’d take some of the more scenic routes.

He reportedly did not stop to collect any passengers on his drive, so he blended in perfectly with your average Dublin bus.

The teenager was not charged for driving without a licence or insurance, and the defence confirmed there was a guilty plea to stealing.

The court heard he is now in new accommodation in Dublin and looking to learn a trade.

Judge Paul Kelly adjourned sentencing for a later date. He granted the youth legal aid and told him to “stay off the buses other than being a passenger”.
