This Documentary Looks Back At Ireland’s Difficult Relationship With The Confession Box
‘Sins of Ireland’, directed by Alex Fegan, is set to nationally debut on 18th April across the country. The new Irish documentary looks at Ireland through the lens of the confession box, which has been ever-present in our country’s history.
Drawing on the narrative of fifteen Irish priests, the film looks at the difficult relationship contemporary Ireland has with its Catholic roots. The work looks at the nuanced history of religion in Ireland, often being a source of hope for some but also a tool of control and shame, which created societal trauma.
Testimonies from multiple priests across Ireland build a picture of personal imperfections that the clergymen feel as well as an analysis of the Church-State dynamic which has manifested throughout Ireland’s history. The documentary also looks at Ireland’s distancing from religion and particularly the confession box in recent decades, leaving most churches to use them as storage facilities.
“As the years went by, I found myself questioning everything about what the Church had meant in people’s lives over the decades & centuries, including what we may have lost as well as what we may have gained as people have moved away from religious traditions. I have always been fascinated by the concept of forgiveness, which I feel is one of the most fundamental aspects of what it means to be human.” Said Alex Fegan.
