This New Documentary Shows A Former Child Soldier’s Journey To Peace in Ireland

This story explores how to mitigate generational trauma, transitioning to Ireland and the personal stories of a former child soldier.

Childhood is a new documentary set to debut at Galway Film Fleadh, centred around the lived experience of Jerome Kamara. Shot in Kamara’s home in New Ross, Wexford, the film details Jerome’s traumatic journey from his life as a former child soldier to living at peace in Ireland. The film is directed by Cian Geoghegana long-term friend and collaborator with Jerome.

As Jerome’s son reaches the age at which he was first captured, we get a first-hand perspective on the everlasting impact of his past as a child soldier. A heartbreaking story of a stolen innocence, we’re told of the measures Jerome has taken to give his son the childhood he deserves.

“My story reflects the kinds of suffering going on all over the world, and the childhoods that are lost as a result. There are kids today who have been robbed of their innocence, or even their lives, simply because they were born in a conflict zone. As a global village, we need to stop looking at violence and warfare as a solution.” said Jerome Kamara.

Childhood will be debuting at Galway Film Fleadh on 10 July at 12:00. Click here to grab tickets.
