Watch the new film celebrating Dublin’s skating community

Words: Dylan Murphy

Created by visual artist Niall Kurb Junki Cullen, ‘What does skateboarding mean to you?’ explores the positive impacts of skating for Dublin’s young people.

The last couple of years have been tough, but for Dublin’s skating community, being able to get outdoors with their friends has been a godsend. Goblin Magazine captured this in the third edition of their magazine through photos, stories and artwork and the creator’s celebrated with the wider community at their launch party in The Sugar Club earlier this month.

Contemporary visual artist Niall KJ Cullen AKA Kurb Junki was on hand to document the night and asked skaters and attendees a simple question that formed the backbone of the subsequent documentary film – ‘What does skateboarding mean to you?

Over 11 minutes, people celebrate the power of community in skating, its role in getting them out of bed in the morning and ability to bring together like minded people under one roof.

It comes Kurb Junki was awarded funding from the Arts Council Agility Award 2021 and he was commissioned by DCC and Culture Night to create a five story high projection mapped sculpture titled Ephemeral Monument. Cullen is also working from a home studio on a sound based project that is due to be released in 2022.
