How can we make traffic-free streets safer for everyone?
Dublin just got an upgrade. Both Capel and Parliament Street have been transformed into traffic-free streets, but what does this mean for you when you use it?
What are traffic-free streets?
Traffic free streets are, simply, spaces where cars are no longer the priority. Instead, they’re designed for people, whether you’re walking, meeting friends, grabbing a coffee, or just passing through. You’ll still see cyclists and delivery riders using these streets, but the key difference is that people on foot come first.
What is the benefit of traffic-free streets?
They make the city better to be in. With less traffic charging past the footpath, these streets feel safer, calmer, and more enjoyable for everyone using them – particularly in the summer when we’re all outside. They create more room for people to move and actually enjoy the city. Whether that’s families out for the day, workers on a lunch break, or visitors exploring the city. The whole campaign and redesign is all about making Dublin’s streets more welcoming and people-focused.
What about cyclists?
Cyclists are absolutely welcome here too but the rules are not the same as standard city roads. These are pedestrian-priority spaces, which means if you are cycling, you must do it at a walking pace while staying alert, and always yielding to people on foot.
