Words Change Lives. Kabin Crew Are Proving It.
Before there’s a song, there’s an idea. Before there’s a rap, there’s writing. And before any of that reaches the world, someone has to believe their voice is worth hearing.
Ireland has always had a way with words, from poetry and theatre to trad, folk and rap. The format changes but the power doesn’t. Sinéad O’Connor used words to demand accountability when others stayed silent. Kneecap turned the Irish language into an act of cultural defiance that an entire generation connected with. Words are how young Irish people push back, speak up and make things better.
That belief, and what happens when young people are finally given the tools to act on it, is at the heart of An Post’s Making Better Happen platform. The idea is simple but the implications are enormous: literacy goes beyond reading and writing. It helps young people express themselves, shape their futures and create positive change. And right now, nobody is making that case more compellingly than a group of young kids from Cork.
Kabin Crew began at The Kabin Studio in Cork, and their conviction to rap in their own accents, about their own community, is exactly what took a local story global and put Knocknaheeny, Cork on the map.
Their new track ‘Making Better Happen’, released with An Post for International Literacy Day, puts it simply:
“The next chapter is up to us / we’re taking back our future yeah the kids are growing up.”
“It’s a Movement powered by words / coming through, so the youth voices are heard.”
It’s lyrics like these that remind us that literacy opens up new worlds. It encourages young people to be more confident in themselves, to articulate their beliefs and to recognise that what they have to say genuinely matters.
For a small island nation, Ireland has always punched well above its weight. From Sally Rooney reshaping how a generation reads, to Blindboy building one of the most listened-to podcasts in the world — the voices that travel furthest are always the ones that were given space and confidence to find themselves at an early age. Making Better Happen exists because that journey starts with words.
An Post has long championed literacy across Ireland through initiatives like the Dolly Parton Imagination Library and Time to Read, to the An Post Handwriting Competition in schools. An Post and Making Better Happen builds on that legacy with a simple conviction: that when young people discover the power of their own words, anything is possible. Their partnership with Kabin Crew is living proof of exactly that.
