150 portaloos and more bins added to Dublin this weekend

Words: Dylan Murphy

Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu announced the news on Twitter today.

150 Portaloo toilets, 54 large Eurobins and 80 Barrel Bins will be erected across the capital from this weekend as part of plans to facilitate outdoor socialising this summer.

The news arrived through Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu who revealed there would be a focus on areas with high footfall.

Chu said, “Just got a confirmation from Recovery Task Force manager: 150 Portaloo toilets, 54 large Eurobins and 80 Barrel Bins across the City from this weekend with a specific focus on high footfall areas in the City Centre!”

She continued saying, “The additional toilets will be open from 10am to 11pm daily” and they will be available in Wolfetone Sq, Central median on O’Connell Street, Smithfield south end, Royal Canal, Mountjoy Sq and Diamond park on the Northside.

On the southside additional toilets will be available in Sycamore St, Temple Bar Square, Chatham Row, South King Street, Coppinger Row, Dame Court, Dame Lane and Merrion Square.

It comes after backlash on social media about the litter and large crowds last weekend and the lack of facilities that contributed to the mess.

The move follows calls from Taoiseach Micheál Martin and other politicians for better outdoor facilities on the city’s streets after a backlash about rubbish left after on-street drinking and crowds congregating last weekend.
